Stanley Day 2 – Alturas Lake – S. Fork – Paradise – Big Smokey

Day 2 was full of more beautiful moist dirt and fantastic views. The weather was a little warmer, but there was still very little dust, none on the single track and just a little on the ATV and roads. I’m already looking forward to next year’s Stanley get-a-way!

Notables:

  1. Robo’s ravine: Robo looped his bike over and down a really steep ravine, took a couple guys and a few minutes to dead-lift his bike back up to the trail
  2. Favorite line: “That’s a recipe for disaster, Wally charging the front and Brock pulling tail…” -TW (it did end up with a smashed $300 head-pipe)
  3. Tim and Rich towing the dude on the broken bike to the ranger station, they missed the Paradise creek trail (which was siiicccckkkk), but caught back up with us at the head of Big Smokey
  4. Brock’s tumble off the Big smokey trail and almost into the river, thankfully he didn’t get hurt!

Crew: same as day 1 minus the Weeks brothers.

Stanley Day 1 – French Creek and Big Boulder

Epic times as usual in Stanley, ID. It rained pretty good as we were traveling up there and the soil conditions were awesome! No dust and only a little bit greasy in a few places, mostly on the wooden bridges. We had 12 riders the first day and no major break-downs or casualties, unless you count Rich slipping on the ramp and throwing his shoulder out of socket… ouch! (watch the end of the video)

Oh, and I didn’t put music to the video, so push play on your music player if you like music with your moto.

Sink Hollow – Snowslide – Davis – Highline

Yeah, I know I’m behind on posting a few rides, I’ll catch up one of these days, but I was just happy to get out and ride this weekend! This summer has been packed with family reunions, little vacation and tons of yard work. Couple that with a super long spring and closed roads into July and that really put a damper on the moto schedule for the year. Thanks to Chaz for making me feel guilty enough to ditch the landscaping and load up the moto.

Conditions were dusty, but it was beautiful out there. I think it’s still a lot greener up there that usual for this time of year, and there is still more water in all the little creeks. We got up there early and only saw one other ATV and two other motos the entire ride, which was unbelievable considering the long Labor day weekend. There were a lot of campers in all the camp spots though.

Wally had a little mishap in Gibson basin, came off his bike in 4th gear and tumbled until his bike drilled him in the back and landed on top of him. He was also in the back so nobody was there to help him out. We waited at the top of snowslide until he rolled up and looked pretty battered. He split off there and rolled home, when I talked to him later that night he said he was pretty sore… sorry man! Get better soon!

Crew: Wally, Chaz, Shawn, and me.

Goodbye Yamaha – Hello KTM

Just gotta dedicate this post to the last couple years of good riding on what I thought was an awesome bike, my 2008 YZ450F.

IMG 0978

Things I loved:

  • Looks: the white, black and red looked really good I thought… although the 2009 with the black wheels looked even better.
  • Factory Connection suspension: before I even rode this bike, I sent the suspension off to Factory Connection and had them re-do the springs/valving for off-road/trail riding. It ended up matching my style of riding perfectly and felt like a cadillac through all the little technical chop. It was a little soft on the whoops and any type of significant jump, but I don’t do that very much anyway.
  • Coming off my CRF450X, this bike felt a lot smaller and lighter with a lower center of gravity, seemed like it was a lot easier to recover if I lost my balance or got crossed up in ruts and roots.
  • Power was plenty for me and easy to manage.
  • Reliable, I never had any type of serious problem with this bike, just regular maintenance and TLC.

Things I didn’t like:

  • Kicking it, I was spoiled that my first real bike had e-start. Fortunately, I learned how to hold my mouth just right in about any situation and could usually start it in just a couple of kicks. Cold= choke, 3 squirts, don’t touch the throttle, kick. Hot= half squirt, barely pull on hot start, kick. After wreck= hop on right foot while spinning counter-clockwise, hot start full open, kick 4 or 5 times… etc.
  • No kickstand, took me a little while to remember to turn off my gas every time I laid he bike down. Made it a lot harder to ride with the kids and jump off to help them when they tip it over.

I hope the gentleman who bought it off KSL will enjoy it as much as I did!

New (to me) bike: 2009 KTM 450 XCF. Thanks to my buddy Zac for giving me a deal I couldn’t pass up. He took really good care of this bike and it has quite a bit less hours than my Yamaha was getting on it. So far, I’ve ridden it in Moab, Cherry Creek, California, and a couple of trails up by Dayton, ID. I love it! It’s already a lot more scratched and probably feels a lot more abused than when Zac had it, but I think this is the start of my favorite bike relationship. Hopefully, I’ll be able to stay injury free and find time to get it out regularly.

Dayton – Clifton, Lower trails

With all the snow still in the hills to the East, I’m afraid the only good riding we’ve got nearby is going to be over on the west side of Cache Valley. The riding was a lot of fun though, little snow, little greasy, lots of good times… we got ~40 miles in. Keston did awesome on the 85cc bike, I could barely keep up with him when he got on it!

Here’s some video, still pretty new to the helmet cam, need to work on a less shaky mount and my editing skills, pretty tedious stuff. It also becomes painfully obvious that I need to “twist it” more…
